Haridwar is situated at the base of the Shivalik hills, where the Ganga, comes down from the mighty Himalayas meets the plains. Haridwar, literally is ‘The gateway to the Gods’. A Gateway to the four pilgrimage of Uttrakhand, Haridwar’s ancient name was Mayapuri. Har- Ki- Pauri is the famous place to see evening ceremony of Ganga, starting at sun set time. Bramha Kund is the place where people wish to take holey dip , because nectar dropped here during the time of Ocean Churning and also has the importance of Kumbh Mela ( Which comes once every 12 Years and the Ardha Kumbha Mela (Coming once every six years) are big draws. Kavand Mela is also famous here, it comes every year during the time of July- August. Besides being a religious place, it has served as the center for learning Yoga, science and culture. |
Kumbh Mela : – Kumbh Mela is a biggest festival of Hindus and greatest festival on earth. It is hugely celebrated four times every twelve years and rotates among four locations Allahabad (Prayag – At the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna and mythical Saraswati river) , Haridwar along Ganga river, Ujjain along the Kshipra river and Nashik along the Godavari river, so a Kumbh Mela is practically held every three years in these four locatoins.
Ardh Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Allahabad, while the Purna (complete) Kumbh always takes place at Allahabad every twelve years. The Maha Kumbh Mela (‘Great’ Kumbh Mela) which comes after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’ which is after every 144 years.
Legend : - The story behind kumbh Mela dates back to the time when the Devas were defeated by Asuras under the leadership of King Bali. After this the control of universe became in hands of Asuras. The Devas pleaded before Lord Vishnu who asked them to treat Asuras in a diplomatic manner and asked them to organise ‘Samudra Manthan’ , which will lead to ‘Amrita’, or nectar of immortality. Samudra Manthan Samudra Manthan (The churning of ocean) was very complex process. For this they required a huge rope which can be used to rotate a churning rod. Mount Mandra was used as churning rod and snake Vasuki, the snake which resides on neck of Lord Shiva, was used as churning rope. Lord Vishnu took the form of A tortoise or Kshyap avatara to support the great mountain on their back. The process of churning of Kshir Sagar started, with Devas pulling the snake from one end and the Asuras pulling from the another end.Devtas pulled Vasuki from tail end while Asuras pulled from the mouth end, which affected them as Vasuki, the king of snakes, was tremendously poisonous.
After several days of continuous churning of the sea the first thing that came out was the ‘Halahal’ poison. The ‘Halahal vish’ was very poisonous and was degrading the universe with its deadly nature. All the Devtas and Sages requested Lord Shiva to help this world from that poison. Accepting whose offer Lord Shiva drank the poison and kept it in his throat, due to which his throat became blue. Since then Lord Shiva is also called ‘NeelKanth.’
After that a series of things came out from the sea. These things were equally divided between Devas and Asuras. These things listed in order of their appearance are as follows -
1- Halahal – The destroying poison – Accepted by Lord Shiva.
2- Sura or Varuni – The goddess and creator of wine. Granted to Asuras.
3- Apsaras – Various divine dancers. Granted to Devtas.
4- Kaustubha- A rare diamond. Granted to Asuras.
5- Ucchaishravas- The divine 7headed horse. Granted to Asuras.
6- Kalpvriksha – The wish granting tree. Granted to Devtas.
7- Kamdhenu- The wish granting divine cow. Granted to Devtas.
8- Airavata – The divine elephant. Granted to Devtas.
9- Lakshmi – The Goddess of Fortune and Wealth. Vishnu and Her were reunited after having been separated for many ages.
10- Shranga – The divine bow of Lord Vishnu. Shankha – The divine conch of Lord Vishnu.
11 – Chandra – The divine moon.
12- Dhanvantri – The divine doctor. Granted to Devtas.
13 - Parijat - The divine tree.
14 – Amrita - The nectar – Drink of immortality.
